Abstract
Two closely connected issues concerning the structure of families of alter tributaries, tributarii or sainteurs, from Saint Peter’s abbey in Ghent, are under discussion in this paper. The analysis is based on rich materials of an unpublished register of the 13th century (RAG, Bisdom, K 2556) with records of genealogies, or tronci, of altar tributarii and on the group of acts of the 12th—13th centuries from the same abbey with descriptions of the same families. The first of these issues concerns important differences in the way of structuring of these family genealogies, on one hand, in the register, and on the other, in the acts. The differences, easily detectable while comparing descriptions of the same families in both types of sources, could be explained in the first place by divergence of intentions and aims of their compilers. The second issue is closely associated with the first one and represents an attempt of reconstruction of concrete kin groups of altar tributarii in order to approach the better understanding of practical family model of the time. This reconstruction could be done while comparing two types of sources which are both giving “deformed reflection” of family “image”, but permit mutual correction and, thus, a more adequate perception of family structure of this particular category of the church dependent people.
