Abstract
Paradoxically as it may seem, but the Ethiopians, proud of their ancient and original heritage during many ages paid no attention for understanding and studying of their historical past. Practically studying of the Ethiopian history was given under the control of the western scholars, who, doing them justice, produced a lot of serious books. The reasons of such attitude of the Ethiopians to their history lay in the character of the feudal Ethiopian society itself, known for its conservatism and ignorance. Enough it to say that even in the first decades of the XX сentury the system of education was in the hands of the Church. The main subjects of the school program were studying of the Bible and learning by heart of the psalms of David. The books of the first nonprofessional Ethiopian historians were rather naïve and full of the Bible quotations. Some changes in this respect began with creation in past war period of Addis Ababa University and invitation as its lectures some prominent western historians. In the last decades in spite of censorship during the imperial and then so called «socialist» regimes in Ethiopia appeared many historians, able to give an impulse for further development of the history in this country.
