Abstract
The article is devoted to the first decades of South African studies in Russia: from their start in the 1920s to the late 1950s when the new era in Soviet policy towards Africa and in Soviet African studies began. The authors analyse the reasons for the attention of the Soviet state to this area, the influence of the state policy on African studies and the changing correlation between opportunities and difficulties that Soviet Africanists faced, as well as the results of their studies.
