Abstract
In this article, the author argues that in the XIIth century in medieval Flanders a fundamental change of the system of name giving, a real “anthroponymic revolution”, enters in its crucial phase. The ancient Germanic anthroponymic system based on the use of a single name, gave place to a completely new anthroponymic practice. In this epoch people started using constantly additional personal “nicknames”, which gradually were transforming into family names (surnames).
