Abstract
The article is devoted to the investigation of the old-believers position in the context of discussions about the time of transubstantiation during the second half of the XVIIth century. An author analyzes the development of this polemic between some leaders of old-believers and different supporters of patriarch’s Nikon reforms, their systems of reasoning. Those, who worked at the problem of transubstantiation, usually concentrated their attention on the latest period of these discussions, disregarding the initial phase. Furthermore, it wasn’t usual to bind the emergence of such problem with schism. Most scientists, as a rule, are tend to regard the church schism as the confrontation between the so-called traditionalists and innovators. An author shows the discourtesy of such interpretation speaking about the question of transubstantiation. He also points out that discussions about the time of transubstantiation emerged in the process of the conflict between the “official” Church and old-believers.
