Abstract
Family policy of the state, its attitude towards education, children, and gender relations reflects the common social, economical and political development of the country. One of the main features of the Swedish state and social policy is the maintaining of gender equality in all spheres of life. Gender equality means also common and equal family duties of spouses.
Swedish state policy in the field of gender equality formed during several decades. It is the result of the so called Swedish model of social and economical development. In the period of 1950s – 1960s traditional family where a woman was a housewife transformed into a new type of the family with two active parents.
Economical and social development caused the transformation of family stereotypes. Even more important was strengthening of economical independence of women and as a result the creation of new forms of family and marriage. These processes were supported by the state policy in the family sphere (familjepolitik). Swedish experience demonstrates active social and political measures as an important factor which provides the new forms of gender relations.
