Abstract
In her paper Irina Y. Khruleva (History Department, Moscow State University) shares her experience in teaching early US history and draws upon several especially productive lines of recent scholarship: ethnocultucal history, an Atlantic perspective, environmental history and gender approach. She argues that a traditional story of «the making of a new people in a new land» excludes too many people and points out enormous diversity and tragic dimensions of the colonial experience. Furthermore, not all colonial America was English, and recent scholarship has attracted attention to New Spain, New France, New Netherland, New Sweden and Russian colonization of North America. By shifting Anglocentric perspective, contemporary historiography has broadened the chronology of colonial period.
