This issue of the journal is devoted to one of the most debated areas in modern human sciences — the analysis of the history of society through the prism of the development of scientific thought, the organization of scientific activities, the reconstruction of the most characteristic biographies of the scholars. The data presented in the issue cover three centuries of the development of world science — from the periods when science only became a professional field of activity until the era when science became the main factor of social progress. The works of leading historians of science are devoted to the dynamics of the development of human and natural sciences of the 18th — 21st centuries; most of the articles introduce the newest materials into scientific circulation — they were not previously known not only to the general public, but also to a narrow circle of specialists. The works presented in the issue emphasize the practical value of the history of science, highlighting those aspects of world experience that are relevant at present.
